Tämän kesän kuumin viikonloppu osui Vaihmalassa pidetyn Ranskalaisen viikonlopun kohdalle, mikä tiesi tälle kuvaajalle hikistä kuvauspäivää hevosurheilun parissa. Valitettavasti omat aikataulut eivät sallineet läsnäoloa koko viikonlopulle ja siksi kisakuvia onkin vain kilpailun maastoesteradalta. Mutta ensikertalaiselle pelkkä maastoesteratakin oli oiva tilaisuus tutustua tähän vauhdikkaaseen hevosteluun. Toivon mukaan tilaisuuksia tulee myös jatkossa, sillä sen verran mukavaa touhua kuvaaminen oli.
Koska tarkoitus oli pärjätä ”minimivarustuksella” ja yli +30°C helteillä kannattaa huolehtia nestetasapainostakin, meni kameralaukun ns. ylimääräinen tila tällä kertaa juomapullolle ja objektiivivalinnat tehtiin jo kotona. Mukaan tarttui vain seuraavanlainen kuvauskalusto:
- 2x Olympus E-M5
- Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN C
- Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO
Jos täysin rehellisiä ollaan, niin lujaa juoksevien hevosten kuvaamiseen löytyy paremmin soveltuvia kameroita iso kasa. Jo 7,5 vuotta vanhan E-M5-kameramallin suurin heikkous tunnetusti on jatkuva tarkennus – ominaisuus, joka auttaisi huomattavasti kohti juoksevien hevosten kuvaamisessa -, joten sain tehdä hieman enemmän töitä onnistuneiden kuvien eteen. (Onneksi tilanteeseeni on tulossa helpotusta loppukesästä julkaistavan E-M5III:n myötä – siinä kun tämä suurin puute on huhujen mukaan vihdoin korjattu ja jatkossa nopeasti liikkuvien kohteiden kuvaaminen sujuu leikiten myös minulta). Tästä kamerani ”puutteesta” huolimatta hyviä kuvia tuli jälleen roppakaupalla enkä juurikaan voi moittia käyttämäni kaluston suoritustasoa päivän tapahtumista. 🙂
Jos jotain olisin tehnyt toisin, olisin saapunut valitsemaan kuvauskohtani aiemmin ja käyttänyt Sigman 56-millisen sijaan Olympuksen omaa 75-millistä objektiivia. Miksikö? Tuo 56mm osoittautui hieman liian lyhyeksi eikä sen tuomasta lisävalovoimasta (f/1.4 vs f/1.8) ollut lainkaan hyötyä, sillä kamerani lyhin valotusaika tuli vastaan jo f/1.8:n kohdalla ISO-arvonkin ollessa jo minimissään. Mutta tyytyväinen olin silti tuon 56-millisenkin tuottamiin kuviin, joten mitäpä sitä suotta enempää valittamaan. Valtaosa kuvista tuli muutenkin otettua 40-150mm f/2.8 -zoomilla, joten tuo kiinteän putken lyhyys ei senkään puolesta muodostunut ongelmaksi.

The summer’s hottest weekend combined with fast galloping horses meant a sweatty day photographing a cross country riding competition in Vaihmala, Lempäälä. The race was a part of the bigger event called Ranskalainen viikonloppu (ie. The French weekend). Unfortunately my schedules didn’t allow me to attend other parts of the event and I had to settle for shooting only the cross country riding part. But to be honest that was enough and since it was my first time watching (and photographing) such event I was thrilled.
I didn’t want to drag along a big set of equipment (because of the heat) so I made the gear decisions already at home. Usually I would have packed two different prime lenses (+ one zoom) with me but one was left home this time to be replaced by a big enough water bottle so I wouldn’t die of thirst. So my gear consisted of:
- 2x Olympus E-M5
- Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN C
- Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO
If I’m being honest there are lots of other cameras that are more equipped for this kind of gig. The 7,5 year old Olympus E-M5 is a model that is known for its awful continuous autofocus mode – a feature which can be handy when fast galloping horses are coming towards you. Nevertheless I managed to get great photos just by using the good old single focus mode. But I do feel confident that my next camera (soon to be released Olympus E-M5III which is rumoured to finally have a usable continuous autofocus) can handle these kinds of events with even more ease.
I think there’s two things that would have made me feel even better about the session: Replacing the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 with my Olympus M.Zuiko 75mm f/1.8 and reserving my spot in the audience a bit sooner. My shooting angles were OK but not perfect. I did get good shots though so I shouldn’t complain too much. The slightly longer lens would have meant less cropping and therefor better image quality.
I did shoot most of my photos with the Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150 mm f/2.8 zoom lens though and was super happy with the results so I guess I shouldn’t complain about that either. All in all, the session went well and I’m now more prepared/experienced to shoot at similar events. And I can’t wait to get to bring my camera to the next cross country riding competition with me.
