Tamperelaisen nuorisosirkuksen Sorin Sirkuksen jokavuotinen joulushow oli tällä kertaa nimeltään Soriferia. Teemana tänä vuonna oli western-henkinen steampunk. Koska en aivan ehtinyt saada uutta Olympus E-M5III -kameraani tankotanssin mm-kilpailuihin 1,5 viikkoa aiemmin, sai tämä joulunäytös toimia uuden kameran neitsytkeikkana.
Kävin jo aiemmin läpi uuden kameran suurimmat erot vanhaan sotaratsuuni E-M5:een, joten en niitä ala uudelleen listaamaan. Mutta sen voin sanoa, että uusittu malli toimi paremmin kuin uskalsin toivoakaan. Kuvanlaatu, automaattitarkennuksen nopeus ja luotettavuus sekä värit olivat selvästi edeltäjäänsä edellä. Eteenpäin on menty niin paljon, että loppukesästä alkanut pienehkö kiinnostus Sonyn kinokokoisella varustettuja kameroita kohtaan katosi lopullisesti. Kävin jo aiemmin Verkkokaupassa tunnustelemassa noita Sonyn kameroita (jotka osoittautuivat omaan käyttööni liian painaviksi ja epäergonomisiksi), minkä jälkeen kiinnostus vaimeni, mutta lopullisen naulan arkkuun löi tämän E-M5III:n selvästi parantunut kuvanlaatu, joka riittää ammattilaistenkin tarpeeseen.
Aivan kuten aiempinakin vuosina, kamerani nokalle tarttui Olympuksen 40-150mm f/2.8, joka ei ole onnistunut koskaan vielä pettämään odotuksiani. Eikä tehnyt sitä nytkään. Uusi kamera toi entistä paremmin kyseisen objektiivin edut esiin ja laadullisesti tämän vuoden kuvasatoni oli parempaa kuin koskaan.
Mutta kamerahöpinöistä sirkukseen. Viime vuoden tähtiparista Natalia Koskela – Sampo Suihkonen oli jäljellä vain jälkimmäinen. Sampo kyllä hoiti roolinsa erinomaisesti tänäkin vuonna, mutta ilma-akrobatian ystävänä Natalian huikeita esityksiä tuli ikävä eikä valitettavasti tämän vuoden esityksessä kukaan kyennyt paikkaamaan tätä isoa aukkoa.
Itse tarinan juoni oli viime vuotista parempi ja rekvisiitta puvustuksineen aivan huippuluokkaa. Erityisesti yksityiskohtien määrä esiintyjien vaatteissa oli häkellyttävää.

I once again went to see the annual Sorin Sirkus Christmas show a couple of weeks ago. Since my new camera arrived a day too late for the POSA Pole Sport World Championships this was my first outing with it.
I had used my Olympus E-M5 with the Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 lens every year at this Christmas show so I always knew what to expect from my photos. This time I decided to push the limits of the new camera (ie. Olympus E-M5III) and – to be honest – the results were even better than I expected! The high ISO photos were miles better than my old camera could deliver and the autofocus was stellar. The image resolution had gone up from 16 to 20 megapixels and even that was more noticeable than I had initially thought.
On my old E-M5 I used to pre-focus the shots and then wait for the right time to press the shutter all the way down to take the photo but with the new model I could just follow the action, compose the shot and press the shutter down immediately at the right time to take the photo of e.g. people flying in the air and the hit ratio was closer to 100% than 90%. If I had done that with my old camera I think I would have gotten maybe one good shot out of 20. If even that. I didn’t even have to try the continuous autofocus because the single autofocusing was that quick and accurate. I’m already loving this camera!
To be completely honest I had thought about switching to Sony’s full frame system but after I went to a local camera store to see how they felt in my hands, the interest faded. Now that I saw what my new E-M5III can do (autofocus and image quality wise) I no longer am tempted by those bigger sensors. They just don’t make sense in my kind of photography – compared to the m4/3 system that I use. Micro 4/3 has the perfect balance of image quality, weight and price and I couldn’t be happier. 🙂
Back to the show itself… It was called Soriferia and it was better than the last year’s show. Unfortunately the star of the previous two shows – Natalia Koskela – was no longer there and her stunning aerial acrobatic routines were therefore gone too. Luckily Sampo Suihkonen continued to shine as the leading actor.
The bits I enjoy the most – aerial acrobatics – weren’t as good as before but the show itself had taken a step forward. The plot was better and so were the props & costumes. The theme was a western steampunk and the costumes were simply breathtaking. They had really put A LOT of effort to making the costumes look as great as they did. The level of details was outstanding.
