It’s now been less than two years since I decided to put more emphasis on photographing pets – yet this was only my first public pet photography event I’ve organized. As the day turned out to be a huge success I will be organizing them in the future as well. The event was held in a local pet store called Käpäläväki.

The event was fully (pre-)booked and all but one showed up – and that is why I have booking fees that will be returned/deducted in the final invoice. If you don’t show up you don’t get you money back. As I wasn’t sure how many would actually show up or even be interested in the event I only reserved time for photographing eight clients. Now that the day was a success in every aspect, I know the formula is working and I only need to organize more events and maybe increase the number of clients as well.

Most of the models were dogs but I did have one rescue cat as well. As soon as the cat (Aada) was taken out of the bag she ran behind the backdrop and under the sofa. She wasn’t interested in getting photographed in front of the backdrop so I had to adapt. I took away the backdrop and started photographing her under the sofa. Eventually Aada did come closer once or twice too so managed to get a few shots of her next to or in front of the sofa. The owner ended up buying several photos of her even though before the shoot she didn’t expect to get a single photo of Aada because of her shyness. So I guess she was positively surprised. 🙂

In overall, the dogs were easier to photograph since they all agreed to stay on set and didn’t go behind the backdrop. One of them did pee on my backdrop and one had enough of posing the second the last treat was gone (he only ate the treats the owner brought along – none of the 4-5 different type of doggie snacks were good enough for him). But despite the lack of rewards we did get good photos of him as well and the owners were pleased with the results. And in the end, that’s all that matters.

I feel like I’m repeating myself as I’m always shooting with the same gear nowadays: Olympus E-M5III and M.Zuiko 12-100mm f/4 PRO were once again my ”weapon of choice”. For lighting the subjects I used two Godox AD200s with an umbrella and a Sundisc (a superb round softbox) attached. The one with the umbrella was on top of the subject to spread the light everywhere and the AD200 with the Sundisc was lighting up the face. I did also use my Godox TT685o for the cat shots since the AD200s didn’t quite reach the model hiding under the sofa. 😀

As I said, the event was a huge success and I enjoyed every second of it so I will definitely be organizing more of these in the future. And the next one might already in May.
