Lisäksi taustan harmaa väri on helposti muutettu joksikin aivan toiseksi jälkikäsittelyssä eli värivalikoima on siten periaatteessa rajaton. Itse asiassa alla olevan gallerian kuvista osassa taustan väri onkin vaihdettu Photoshopin puolella joksikin muuksi.

Just one week after the pet photography day at Käpäläväki I was shooting again. But this time the location was something new: a local pet store called Musti & Mirri. It was also the first time I had a 2-day event.

Despite having twice as many slots for photographing I only had as many clients as the week before. I guess (or hope) it was due to the fact that this event was decided only less than two weeks before the actual date and we had only about 10 days to advertise the event.

Most of the models were once again dogs but I did have a couple of gorgeous and very photogenic cats to photograph too. Oddly, all of the dogs were also smaller than week before and the biggest model was a 9-month-old Labrador Retriever called Juju.

Even though I’m repeating myself I’ll just briefly mention that the gear I used was once again Olympus E-M5III with M.Zuiko 12-100mm f/4 attached to it. And two Godox AD200s were responsible for lighting my models. But I did have something new on the set as well: a new, gray backdrop. I received this paper roll backdrop as a birthday present and opted to use it at the event since it’s 75 cm wider than the fabric one I’ve been using lately. I thought it would save me time in post-processing as I wouldn’t have to expand the background as much when a bigger dog gets on the stage but since I only had small(ish) dogs it really didn’t make a difference this time. But that’s OK. At least I got some diversity to my galleries.

The paper roll backdrop has its pros and cons compared to fabric (muslin and canvas) ones. On the plus side it’s easier to get rid of the sand and hair. And as one might suspect, there is always lots of hair and sand on the set when you are shooting with pets. Unfortunately the models do drool and leave other marks on the paper and those are pretty much impossible to remove. Grease stains etc. will stay on the paper rolls forever. The paper can (and will!) also rip easily and I got the first tear on my shiny new backdrop in less than an hour. Luckily it was a small one and a small piece of tape fixed it. And Photoshop is also your friend when it comes to keeping the background on your photos nice and clean. 😉

My wife was kind enough to let me choose the color of the backdrop and I opted to go with gray. Why? Because it will look good with almost every other color and is easily turned into something else. The ability to change the color easily in post-processing gives me almost endless options regarding the background colors.

I also tried adding some texture to the background (in addition to changing the color) and since I was so satisfied with the results, I will definitely be using that trick in the future as well.

I’ve already started discussing about the next pet photography events and the next one will probably be in late August. Stay tunes to find out more about the details.
