Vain muutamia päiviä Finnish Photo Awards 2022 -valokuvauskilpailun finaalin/palkintogaalan jälkeen sain sähköpostia, jossa kerrottiin, että kansainvälisen International Photography Awards™ -kilpailun tulokset oli julkistettu. Pienen selaamisen jälkeen tuli tuttu kuva vastaan. Ottamani kuva Pekka-nimisestä hevosesta oli sijoittunut ei-ammattilaisten sarjassa ”Nature, Animals/Pets”-kategorian toiseksi! Se pienenpieni harmitus palkintopallisijoituksen jäämisestä niin lähelle FPA2022-kilpailussa unohtui siis hyvinkin nopeasti ja muuttui suunnattomaksi iloksi.
Järjestäjien mukaan kilpailuun lähetettiin yli 14 000 kuvaa 120 eri maasta eli mistään pienestä kilpailusta ei ole kyse ja palkittujen kuvien joukossa oli upeita ja vielä upeampia kuvia. Hopeasijoitukseni myötä sain myös kutsun samaisen järjestön (IPA) järjestämään Lucie Awards -palkintogaalaan New Yorkin Carnegie Halliin. Valitettavasti ei-ammattilaisten sarjassa vain voittajien matkat kustannetaan järjestäjien toimesta, joten tänä vuonna jää tapahtuma väliin. Katsotaan sitten ensi vuonna josko onnistuisin parantamaan sijoitustani pykälällä… 😉
Osallistuin kilpailuun viidessä eri kategoriassa ja kaikissa viidessä onnistuin pääsemään vähintään kunnianmaininnan (”Honorable mention”) ansainneiden listalle. Lähettämistäni kuvista yksi sijoittui toiseksi ja neljä sai kunniamaininnan. Kyseiset kuvat näkyvät alla olevassa kuvagalleriassa.
”Nature, macro”-kategoriaan osallistuin viiden neitokorentokuvan sarjalla ja näistä kuvista vain pääkuva on esiteltynä alaosan kuvagalleriassa. ”People, Other”-kategoriassa kunniamaininnan sai kuvani sirkustaitelija/tanssija Emmista. ”People, portrait”-kategoriassa taas kunniamaininta tuli kuvasta, jossa notkeusakrobaatti Kalle Pikkuharju on ahtautunut läpinäkyvään laatikkoon.
Lemmikkikuville oli kilpailussa toinenkin kategoria (”Special, Pets”) ja myös siinä sain näkyvyyttä, kun FPA2022-kilpailussa neljänneksi yltänyt kuvani sai myös tässä kilpailussa kunniamaininnan. Kyseisessä kuvassa on esiteltynä Muska-bernimme matkaa 8-viikkoisesta 1-vuotiaaksi koiraksi.
Nyt kun takana on urani kaksi ensimmäistä – mutta sitäkin kovatasoisempaa! – valokuvauskilpailua ja kummastakin tuli menestystä, voidaankin turvallisesti sanoa, että kilpailu-urani ei suinkaan ollut tässä. Jatkossa voin myös hyvillä mielin mainostaa itseäni kansainvälisesti palkittuna valokuvaajana, mutta luonnollisestikin sijoituksia lähdetään parantamaan tulevissa kilpailuissa. 🙂
Only a few days after the Finnish Photo Awards 2022 final I received an email saying that the winners of the International Photography Awards™ 2022 contest have been announced. I started browsing through dozens and dozens of categories until a familiar photo came across. A photo I had taken of a horse named Pekka had been selected as the second best photo in ”Nature, Animals/Pets”-category for non-professional photographers! So it didn’t take long for me to get over the slightly disappointing 4th place in the FPA 2022 contest. Getting the 2nd place in a high level, international photography contest was something I couldn’t even dare to dream of!
They said people sent over 14 000 photos to the contest from 120 different countries. That says a lot. The contest was huge (in many ways) and the level very high. Getting the ”silver medal” in the contest meant I was also invited to the Lucie Awards gala which is another big photography event by the same organization that is behind the IPA contest. Unfortunately only the winners in each category are provided with some prize money and flight tickets to the event so I won’t be attending the Lucies this year. Hopefully I can improve my ranking next year and attend that event as well… 😉
I sent photos to five different categories and managed to earn either an ”Honorable mention” or an actual award in each category. As mentioned, one photo was selected as the 2nd best and four others got an honorable mention. The photos that got recognition can be seen at the bottom of this page.
I sent a series of damselfly photos to the ”Nature, macro”-category but only the main photo is shown in the gallery below. In ”People, Other”-category the honorable mention came for my photo of Emmi the circus artist / dancer. In ”People, portrait”-category the same thing happened to my photo of a contortionist Kalle Pikkuharju inside a glass box.
There was another category for pets (”Special, Pets”) and the same photo of our beloved Bernese Mountain Dog Muska I sent to the Finnish Photo Awards (and got the 4th place) received the honorable mention in IPA 2022 as well.
So… The two first photo contests I’ve ever participated in are over and the results were AMAZING. Both of the contest are very highly distinguished and not that easy to succeed in. With that said I’m extremely grateful for getting recognition in both contests and it has given me a huge boost of confidence in what I do. It will also motivate me to do better and that also means I will be participating in more contests in the future and the aim is to improve my rankings.
And the best thing about my success in the IPA 2022 is that I can now promote myself as an internationally recognized photographer. That is a truly incredible achievement – especially when considering I’ve only began providing my photographing services a couple of years ago.
